Network Devices

I recently attended a conference where Vint Cerf presented the key-note. His personality really came through during his talk; he is truly an amazing speaker. During his speach, he touched upon a future where nearly all appliances and devices will be ip-addressable. At the time I was thinking, "what isn't ip-enabled?" A few days later I started building this collage, which contains photos of products that are network-enabled and available TODAY from a retailer near you. This took me only a couple of hours, however towards the end I was having a hard time thinking of things to search for. I even found a network-enabled automatic dog feeder.

So the devices are out there, and for us early adopters, we never have to wonder if the dog got his breakfast...

Do you think cars in the future will be IP based (for control purposes) and automated? If so, what timeframe do you think that will occur?

Michelle - before cars are IP enabled - do you think that the security issues first need to be addressed?

I am not sure I would want someone to "hack" my car, esp. if it were in motion...

I heard that even our children will be IP-enabled one day. That way, missing children may be easier to locate.

The reduction in privacy remains an issue that has plagued retail outlets that tried to do clustering, profiling and planning based on IP tracking.

Have fun! *waves*
